Artist Statement
Philadelphia-based artist Ross "Hatter" Kessler specializes in interactive and immersive installations. Using light as his primary medium, along with other fabricated and found materials, Ross creates playscapes of surprise and wonder that enchant his audiences to connect and explore as active participants. His electrical engineering background and avant-garde influences fuel his use of innovative, high-impact forms. Ross couples his technical precision with the belief that art should be silly and irreverent, but as a means to enhance—rather than preclude—deeper meaning.
With a focus on technical precision and irreverent play, Ross’s work naturally lends itself to environments that immerse and entertain. His installations have been exhibited at festivals as large as Burning Man, and themed events and attractions such as Eastern State Penitentiary’s Halloween Horror Nights, while his LED costuming collaborations have been on view at Philadelphia’s Ghostly Circus performance and the Philadelphia Zoo’s LumiNature experience.
